Dear PJK,

Choosing to do a day 5 versus a day 3 embryo transfer is a decision best made with you doctor. We at Pacific Fertility Center make this decision on a case by case basis and include factors such as diagnosis, age, and embryo quality. The above list, which includes donor egg IVF, is a good description of when we would look at a day 5 transfer as an option. We include the patients in the decision process, and often don't make the decision until day 3. This allows us to get the best sense of which treatment would be most beneficial. It is helpful to know that you can freeze extra embryos on day 5 if you have more than you would like to transfer back. Ask your doctor if they have a vitrification (fast freezing) program, as this is how we freeze our day 5 embryos.
