The process of IVF with PGD is a technology that allows genetic testing of an embryo prior to implantation and before pregnancy occurs. The process of IVF with PGD allows only unaffected embryos to be selected to be transferred back to the uterus of the female partner. During the procedure, a single cell is removed from the embryo (sperm + egg) two days after fertilization in the laboratory. The preimplantation genetic diagnosis determines whether or not the embryo from which the DNA was obtained carries the genetic mutation. Some individuals may know they already carry genetic mutations because of other affected family members and the IVF with PGD is an excellent selection for them.

At Pacific Fertility Center our goal is to guide you through a successful cycle of IVF treatment, and to assist with the emotional ups and downs which are an inevitable part of this IVF treatment process. Our entire staff of physicians, nurses, embryologists, and administrators is devoted solely to the practice of treating couples and individuals needing assistance with their infertility. Toward those goals, we have a dedicated staff of Reproductive Endocrinologists, PhDs, and RNs, administrative and ancillary staff all committed to providing the finest possible medical care and high pregnancy outcomes using the newest and best IVF treatment techniques available to help you conceive. We are available day or night everyday of the year.

We offer two types of initial consultation appointments with an infertility doctor. A free telephone consultation with an infertility doctor will take about 30 minutes. At this time the physician will review your medical records and personal medical history, answer any questions you may have and outline your possible treatment options. This type of appointment works well for women who are still considering treatment or find it difficult to travel to our center. A personal visit with an infertility doctor will take about 60 minutes. You will discuss your medical records and personal medical history, address questions, outline doctor’s fertility treatments and get necessary medications and/or orders testing.

The process of preimplantation genetic diagnosis or PGD is a technology that allows genetic testing of an embryo prior to implantation and before pregnancy occurs. The PGD process is used in conjunction with in vitro fertilization or IVF and allows only unaffected embryos to be selected to be transferred back to the uterus of the female partner. During PGD, a single cell is removed from the embryo (sperm + egg) two days after fertilization in the laboratory. Some couples have been tested for common genetic mutations such as cystic fibrosis or sickle cell anemia and are aware prior to conceiving a child that they are at risk of having a child with serious medical problems.

The process of preimplantation genetic diagnosis or PGD refers to the ability to determine gene related diagnoses in very early human embryos prior to implantation of the embryo in the uterus. During preimplantation genetic diagnosis procedure, a couple in which one or both partners carry a gene related mutation undergoes IVF to create several early embryos. A single cell is removed from the embryo two days after fertilization in the laboratory for testing. The nuclear material containing the DNA is then put through an amplification process to make millions of copies of the gene. The preimplantation genetic diagnosis determines whether or not the embryo from which the DNA was obtained carries the genetic mutation.

Treatments for male infertility are influenced by at least three important factors: 1. Cause of male infertility, if identifiable, 2. Severity of the sperm defect, and 3. Age of the female partner. In the case of a prior vasectomy being the cause of the male infertility, there are two treatment choices – vasectomy reversal or IVF-ICSI with epididymal or testicular extraction. Age and health of female partner and length of time since vasectomy are important factors in decision-making. It can sometimes take 6-9 months to recover adequate levels following reversals. The more time between the vasectomy and the reversal, the greater the chances are that the surgery will be unsuccessful or that anti-sperm antibodies will form.

IVF patients interested in the third party donor egg service have two options available to them. They can select a family member or a friend, or they can work through a third party agency that provides anonymous donors. You are welcome to work with Pacific Fertility Center donor egg agency, an in-house agency offering reproductive services and programs or you can opt to choose an independent agency from which to obtain an ovum donation. Peggy Orlin is a certified Marriage and Family Therapist and is available to discuss issues relating to third party parenting (sperm or egg donor and surrogacy or gestational carrier). She counsels patients as they face the personal challenges of infertility.

Undergoing infertility treatment can be overwhelming for some patients. The time and energy that is needed, both physically and emotionally can drain even the staunchest crusader. To cope most effectively with the stresses of infertility treatment you will need support. While friends and family will prove to be invaluable allies, there is nothing like connecting with like-minded individuals who might also be going through reproductive infertility treatment or even ICSI, vasectomy reversal or tubal reversal. The Internet offers an abundance of IVF resources for support. Pacific Fertility Center has waded through them for you and many of these can be directly accessed from our website at InfertilityDoctor.com.

At Pacific Fertility Center our goal is to guide you through a successful cycle of IVF or invitro fertilization, and to assist with the emotional ups and downs which are an inevitable part of the invitro fertilization procedure. Toward those goals, we have a dedicated group of infertility and Reproductive Endocrinologists, PhDs, and RNs, administrative and ancillary staff all committed to providing the finest possible invitro fertilization medical care and high pregnancy outcomes using the newest and best techniques available to help women conceive. Equally important is that the patient feel cared for, with all needs recognized and met. Our doors are open everyday of the year and our phones are always answered.

What is in vitro fertilization? Literally, in vitro fertilization means ‘fertilization in glass’. IVF comprises several steps: the woman is given fertility drugs that stimulate her ovaries to produce a number of mature eggs; at the proper time, the eggs are retrieved through a needle that has been inserted into her ovaries; the eggs are fertilized in a Petri dish with the sperm; and subsequently the embryos are transferred into the uterus. At PFC our goal is to guide you through a successful cycle of in vitro fertilization, and assist with the emotional ups and downs which are an inevitable part of this process. We also provide you with a carefully compiled list of support resources which can be accessed from our website at www.InfertilityDoctor.com.

If you have to cope with infertility in California you are in luck. Pacific Fertility Center located in California offers services to those who have had to deal with the frustrations surrounding infertility. The emergence of assisted medical reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilization or IVF and intracytoplasmic sperm injection or ICSI has been paralleled by the revolutionary advances in understanding of the basis of genetic diseases. The development of IVF treatment has allowed many couples to have the families they may otherwise have been unable to have due to their infertility in California. This reproductive technology has allowed researchers to study the genetic make-up of the egg, sperm and earliest stages of embryos.

The bright spot for women who have not found Mr. Right or Mr. Right Sperm Donor may be human egg freezing for later fertilization and IVF. Still considered experimental, egg freezing is a relatively new clinical procedure and has much lower success rates than frozen embryos. Some say the numbers for egg freezing are around 1 live birth for every 100 eggs frozen, yet there are clinics around the world claiming to have 1 live birth for every 10 eggs frozen. The success of this procedure will continue to improve as technology and scientific knowledge develop. Pacific Fertility Center will offer this cryopreservation alternative in the near future.

The ICSI IVF is a new procedure that allows couples with sperm problems to have the in vitro fertilization treatment. Developed in Belgium in 1992, ICSI IVF is the process of injecting a single sperm into an egg. It is a remarkable procedure since it allows men with only very few sperm to have a chance of having their own children. As a part of the ICSI IVF process, the eggs that are collected from your partner’s ovaries are kept in special incubators in the laboratory. Your ejaculate sample is processed to recover the good sperm – the strongest and best swimming - to be used to inseminate the eggs and to have a successful pregnancy.

If you need assistance with male infertility in California, the Pacific Fertility Center can help. Unless you need a vasectomy reversal which requires surgery, most men will initially be diagnosed with a potential male infertility in California based on the results of an ejaculated sperm specimen. Factors to be considered in male infertility in California include volume, motility and the morphology, or shape of the sperm. Once an abnormal finding on a semen analysis is identified, the partner should be referred to an urologist, preferably one that is sub-specialty trained in andrology (the urologist version of a reproductive endocrinologist) for an examination and a review of his medical history. Visit our web site for information.

Pacific Fertility Center is participating in an embryo freezing program that helps protect the fertility of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation. Cancer treatments can affect fertility in men and women. In some cases infertility will be temporary, but in others permanent. The best option for women is to freeze embryos now for IVF transfer later. At PFC we hope to extend a helping hand to patients unable to afford these costly treatments and provide them with the hope of building a family with an embryo freezing program. Still considered experimental, frozen eggs are a relatively new procedure for women who have not found Mr. Right but they have much lower success rates than embryo freezing.

At San Francisco Center for Reproductive Medicine, an IVF clinic of California, we believe that, along with providing safe and successful fertility care, maintaining correct reproductive laboratory procedures is an equally important fertility responsibility. In the 100,000 babies born in the U.S. since 1979 with the help of in vitro fertilization, instances of embryo or gamete mix-up are rare. At the IVF clinic of California, we maintain our positive track record through the continued use of our proven SurTransfer protocol. At the IVF clinic of California, if ever there should be any mishaps with egg, sperm or embryo, we are committed to immediate and total honesty with our infertility patients.

In developing a California infertility treatment plan, the difficulty often lies in estimating the odds of conceiving with any one California infertility treatment method, considering the patient's age and diagnosis. We do know that IVF is probably one of the most efficient forms of California infertility treatment, in that it usually provides for the highest rates of successful pregnancy for any one cycle. But for some people with less severe medical causes for their lack of reproductive fertility, non-IVF approaches may prove successful and for others, IVF is realistically the best way to achieve pregnancy within a reasonable period of time. The urologists associated with our center provide state-of-the-art urology care for male sperm problems.

At Pacific Fertility Center, we bring together a complete team, each member a specialist to focus on your infertility situation and your preimplantation genetic diagnosis in California. Preimplantation genetic diagnosis in California or PGD is a technology that allows testing of an embryo prior to implantation and before pregnancy occurs. Preimplantation genetic diagnosis in California is used in conjunction with in vitro fertilization and allows embryos diagnosed as free of a specific disease to be transferred into a woman for pregnancy. The reproductive tests are performed by removing a cell from a 3-day old embryo and having the cell genetically screened for specific diseases. Visit our web site for more information on our medical services.

There are only a few causes of infertility for which California invitro fertilization is the only fertility treatment option. Blockage of or severely damaged fallopian tubes is one reason that California invitro fertilization would be the only option. Another instance which calls for California invitro fertilization is when the male has extremely low sperm count or no sperm in the ejaculate. For most all other causes of infertility, it is possible that a patient or couple may be able to conceive without assistance or with a less aggressive approach such as intrauterine insemination (IUI). Visit our web site at www.infertilitydoctor.com for more information on IVF and egg retrieval, storage and transfer.

More patients undergoing bay area fertility treatment ask about incorporating acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine treatment with their IVF. While this procedure is based on an ancient medical tradition, current studies are trying to clarify the physiological health basis for bay area fertility treatment results. Some indicate that the bay area fertility benefits may be mediated by opioid-types of proteins of central nervous system. Some of the proteins affect gonadotropin secretion from the pituitary and could impact menstrual cyclicity. Others propose that blood flow to the pelvic organs may be improved through mechanisms other than the central nervous system. Others propose there might be a psychosomatic benefit.
