Treatments
for male infertility are influenced by at least three important
factors: 1. Cause of male infertility, if identifiable, 2. Severity
of the sperm defect, and 3. Age of the female partner. In the case
of a prior vasectomy being the cause of the male infertility, there
are two treatment choices – vasectomy reversal or IVF-ICSI with
epididymal or testicular extraction. Age and health of female partner
and length of time since vasectomy are important factors in decision-making.
It can sometimes take 6-9 months to recover adequate levels following
reversals. The more time between the vasectomy and the reversal,
the greater the chances are that the surgery will be unsuccessful
or that anti-sperm antibodies will form.
